soup soup soup

i asked jeeves why you were so awesome and he didn't have a clear answer

ev is visiting! unfortunately, i've been feeling rather stuffy lately, but her little asian presence makes me so happy. a bunch of us got together last night, and it was just so interesting to stop and think about how i met all of those folk within my first year, in the same dorm. truly something special.

ev greeted me by saying that i looked so happy, and while i was of course delighted so see her, it spoke to me that a good friend who i hadn't seen in a while could just look at me and say 'yep, this girl is a happy girl!' because i am happy, and everything in life just seems a little bit sweeter these days.

and uh, now here's a picture of a truck so that we can add some more beef to this entry:

and, of course... HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATHARINA!!

hey bill, thanks for visiting

β€œIt's just a fact: Democracy doesn't work without citizen activism and participation, starting at the community. Trickle down politics doesn't work much better than trickle down economics. It's also a fact that civilization happens because we don't leave things to other people. What's right and good doesn't come naturally. You have to stand up and fight for it β€” as if the cause depends on you, because it does. Allow yourself that conceit β€” to believe that the flame of democracy will never go out as long as there's one candle in your hand.” -bill moyers

ohhh op-ed fun

now this is amusing. thank you, generally conservative david brooks.

sometimes, i'll confess to crying at movies

Joel: I don't see anything I don't like about you.
Clementine: But you will! But you will, and I'll get bored with you and feel trapped, because that's what happens with me.
Joel: Okay.

when we ask ppl if they're doing okay, we really aren't prepared for anything but a mediocre response. if someone says no, we don't entirely know what to do. that's not the way this sort of banter is supposed to go. what i have encountered recently, however, is the opposite. it's a funny predicament that i somehow feel like a jerk for responding with "really good actually."

when our friends fall upon bad times, we are there to listen. this is certainly important, warranted, and comforting. no one really wants to hear about a whole heap of good though. it leaves us with no cookie cutter responses, and perhaps sometimes, only leaves an uncomfortable sense of disdain. i'm not saying that anyone has particularly been a punk lately, i think it's just an interesting observation nonetheless. i also wouldn't peg myself in the category of immune to this, just makes me wonder why that is. i suppose it can be argued that we need a friend more in bad times than in good, but what are the good times without friends in the first place? ohhh interpersonal commmunication dilemna...

and to throw in a bit of random:
i promise not to think of you in your underwear if you promise not to think of me in mine- my speech prof., pointing out that they idea of picturing your audience in their underwear is just bizarre

he finally said WHAT?

president bush, yesterday:
"Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government, and to the extent that the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility."

in response, maureen dowd:
"President Bush continued to try to spin his own inaction yesterday, but he may finally have reached a patch of reality beyond spin. Now he's the one drowning, unable to rescue himself by patting small black children on the head during photo-ops and making scripted attempts to appear engaged. He can keep going back down there, as he will again on Thursday when he gives a televised speech to the nation, but he can never compensate for his tragic inattention during days when so many lives could have been saved."

oh kanye

"George Bush doesn't care about black people." click here to watch the video of Kanye West's statements. while i think that it is important to get the word out on this subject, kanye's emotional and inarticulate rant on the matter caused quite the stir and perhaps did not reach its audiences as effectly as it needed to be. while this specific comment was edited out of the broadcast before airing on the west coast, viewers watching live felt a sense of shock upon hearing his accusations.
what we must ask ourselves though is how much of it is true? although new orleans is predominantly inhabited by blacks, why is it that suffering black people are all that we see on the news? and even more disturbing, how is it that in america in 2005 racism could find its way into such a tragedy?

these pictures, which did not take long to pop up allover the internet, (1, 2, 3) further heat up the controversy at hand. what is our government doing about this? and why is it being shaped as a 3rd world tragedy?
